NOTE: This is a full walkthrough for the game. The text and graphics are chock full of puzzle solutions and spoilers. If you haven't played the game yet and don't want stuff to be given away, don't read this! Check out the spoiler-free screenshots and videos instead. Situation: Comedy
The story starts with Sam and Max facing off in a luger vs. salad shooter duel. Before any blood (and very many tears) can be shed, the phone once again rings with a mission for the Freelance Police. Myra Stump is holding her audience hostage. Flip on the TV and you can see her in the midst of an audience guilt-trip. There's nothing to pick up in the office, but be sure to check your messages. You'll get a few from Max, and one from Sybil, who says she's switched professions. Straight StreetLet's head over to investigate what Sybil is up to. She has, in fact, started a tabloid rag, and talking to her will reveal that she needs a photo featuring an extraterrestrial canoodling with the local city-folk to put on the front page of her paper.
Over at Bosco's Inconvenience, the proprietor has donned a British alter-ego. Talk to Bosco and ask him what he's got behind the counter for sale. He's offering up a voice modulator for 30 shillings, which roughly converts to equal one million American dollars. We will have to acquire that money a little later; in the mean time, there's a can of shaving cream which will probably be useful. If you try to grab it, the Skinbodies, a gang of shaved rats, will enter the store snatch the can away.
After them! Jump in the DeSoto and chase them. A driving mini-game will begin, with the goal of stopping the rats. Try shooting at them, and you'll see that they will react quickly and maneuver their car out of harm's way. What you'll want to do is get a bit creative. Shooting to a given side of the rats' vehicle will cause them to steer the opposite direction. You might have noticed a recurring orange sign warning of an open manhole in the middle of the road. Let's see if we can't make the rats' reflexes work against them. With some good timing, you should be able to shoot at them in such a way that it causes them to steer into the manhole. Max will grab the shaving cream as the rats plunge into the sewer. Head over to the TV studio. TV StardomHave a quick look around the main room, and then chat with the woman wearing the headset. It turns out she's the director of most of the shows on the WARP network, and she's holding auditions for the two lead characters of the Midtown Cowboys sitcom. Give it a try! The director wants you to re-enact a scene from Old Yeller, wherein Sam plays a mad dog, and Max is the boy who must put down his faithful pet. What could help the Freelance Police convey the appropriate emotions per their roles?
Sam isn't quite selling the rabidity on his own, so let's give him some help. Use the hard-won shaving cream can on Sam, and he'll become a much more convincing hydrophobe.
Next, Max can't quite deliver his character's heartbroken state. Fortunately, you've still got the teargas grenade launcher from Culture Shock in your inventory, so blast Max with it and the waterworks will start in earnest. You've got the job!
Head through the door with "Midtown Cowboys" printed above it, and you'll arrive on the set. Since the on-set cow, Bossy, has eaten most of the script, you'll be on your own to create the scene. Don't worry; this will be easy, possibly. Tell the Director that you're ready to start taping. Grab the lampshade, and the plate from the table. Take a note of the prop cow droppings behind Bessy, as Sam refuses to pick it up. Mr. Featherly, the landlord character played by Philo Pennyworth, is demanding entrance on the grounds that he thinks you're hiding a cow in the apartment. How can we hide Bessy? Use the lampshade on the cow, and at that moment, Featherly will barge in and ask who your guest is. Tell him that Bossy is your chef, and he will start a lengthy conversation with the disguised cow. Use the plate on the cow pie. Featherly will walk over and pull on the cow's tail, causing the cow to moo loudly. Tell Featherly that the "chef" said "Moo Goo Gai Pan", and Featherly will eat a sample of the cow pie. That's a wrap. After this segment is shot, you will get a Midtown Cowboys videotape to use later.
Riches and Celebrity Status
Walk through the door to the Game Show "Who's Never Going to be a Millionaire!". Magician-turned-guru Hugh Bliss is there! You'll notice that the door to Myra's studio is here. Talk with Hugh, and you'll find out that he's a.) nuts, b.) magical, and c.) due to be a guest on Myra's show. Ask him to show you a magic trick, and he'll offer to change color for you. Remember what Sybil was looking for? Now that you guys are famous television stars, you could probably fulfill her request if you were to locate a green man. Ask Hugh to turn green, and then ask for a photo. Once the conversation is over, Hugh will be asked by the Director to fill in as host on the game show. Go ahead and try to play the game by selecting the contestant's podium. Hugh will ask an impossible question, and nothing you can say will be correct. You lose, and the show cuts to commercial. Walk over to the host's podium and take the question cards. Trying to play the game again will not work until you have something to replace the impossible questions.
For now, head over to Myra's door and talk to her. She's unwilling to release her "guests", and won't let you enter her studio until you're able to prove your celebrity status. You will need to show her:
Since you've already taken care of the TV show bit, you can hand over your tape of Midtown Cowboys to her. We don't have any of the other items at this point, so let's explore a bit more. Re-enter the Midtown Cowboys set, and then go through the door to the "Embarrassing Idol" area. Oh, fantastic. You're reunited with the Soda Poppers, and it looks like they're heavily involved in the outcome of this program. Peepers is the main contestant, while Whizzer and Specs are sitting on the judges' panel. As soon as you enter, Max will be selected to judge alongside the two Soda Poppers, and it's up to Sam to face Peepers in the singing competition. Talk to the judges, and remind Max to keep focused on the primary task, getting on the Myra show. Whizzer looks committed to voting for his brother no matter what, but mentions an interesting tidbit about his tomato allergy, and about it being his birthday. Specs is a fan of technical proficiency and will vote for the person with the best high note.
Go over and talk to Peepers. He'll insist that he doesn't use any artificial means to hit his high notes, but maybe we can. Pick up his lyric sheets. Until we have a way to convince these judges, Peepers will be a shoo-in. Return to the Game Show room.
Use Peepers' lyrics with the card slot, and start the game again. Hugh Bliss will ask "Am I Blue?" Unless you've asked him to change to that color, go ahead and say "No". You'll win a million dollars (worth of food stamps)!
Head over to the Cooking Show set. Remember what Peepers' had said about his birthday? Feel free to whip up a cake using any set of ingredients. It doesn't really matter, but you can use them all to hear some funny dialogue from Max.
Let's head back to town; there are a few things to be taken care of there. Go to Sybil's place, and give her the photo. She'll be able to print her paper, and they will show up in the dispenser outside of Bosco's shop. Go ahead and grab a copy, then head into Bosco's. Walk over to the condiments section and get a generous amount of ketchup (made with tomatoes, right?) on the cake you put together. Now give Bosco the food stamps, and he'll give you the voice modulator, which is in fact a helium balloon rigged up to an inhaler (and silly straw, by the looks of it).
Return to the Embarrassing Idol set. Feed Whizzer the ketchup cake and he'll wolf it down, at a terrible price. With only two judges left, you'll just have to get their unanimous approval and you'll get a recording contract for host-impressing purposes. Take a hit from the voice modulator, and grab the microphone, spouting any lyrics you want. Max and Specs should go for it in a big way, and the contract will be yours. Escape from Talk Show Purgatory
Return to the Game Show set, and head to Myra's door to show her your tabloid front page photo and recording contract. You're on the show! She seems to be wrapping up an interview with your co-star, Bessy. You spot a suspicious-looking Hypno-Bear that seems to be the source of Myra's hypnosis, but you're powerless to seize it, because you seem to be glued to Myra's couch while she badgers you about your moral fiber. On her desk you'll see a sparking microphone, a glass of water, and the Hypno-Bear. Let's change the subject in Myra's conversation. But first, let's make use of the voice modulator once more. Tell her you'd rather re-live your Embarrassing Idol victory, and you'll sing your song, which shatters the glass next to Myra, spilling water all over the desk. No matter what you talk about, she'll ask about the Alien Love Triangle times. Tell her that there was someone else involved, and then accuse "Bessy the Cow". Myra will bring the cow back out, and re-position the microphone directly in the puddle of water, which will fry the bear (and her). The camera zooms in on the empty package, and you see that the Toy Mafia was responsible for sending the Hypno-Bear to Myra. But for now, the world is safe from mass hypnosis…
