NOTE: This is a full walkthrough for the game. The text and graphics are chock full of puzzle solutions and spoilers. If you haven't played the game yet and don't want stuff to be given away, don't read this! Check out the spoiler-free screenshots and videos instead. Reality 2.0
We rejoin the Freelance Police in their office, which has undergone some noticeable changes since the previous episode. Judging by the Presidential Great Seal rug on the floor and the Bill of Rights on the dartboard, it appears that President Max has been able to remain in office since the end of Abe Lincoln Must Die! Uh-oh. The game opens with Max making a few choice presidential decrees, when the commissioner calls regarding a massive computer-related crisis. Straight StreetAfter the opening cutscene finishes, have a look around the office. There doesn't appear to be anything crucial to pick up here right now, so let's head down to Straight Street.
Pay a visit to Bosco's. He appears to have donned some strange new persona, and claims to be a half-elf ranger. Have a chat with him, and he'll tell you how he's moved his store online, and that he's concerned about Jimmy Two-Teeth setting up a competing arms shop within his own store. However, he's got a new biological weapon for sale for the price of one billion dollars, payable online only.
We'll have to pick that item up a bit later, then. For now, let's talk to Jimmy Two-teeth, who is perched on the display table. He is offering up an adorable cannon, but seems hesitant to sell it to Sam and Max. If you try to grab it, he'll fire a round at you, which knocks you to the floor. Pay attention to what happens after that. He takes a moment to reload the cannon. While he's doing that, click on him and Max will stuff him into the cannon. You've now got yourself one rat cannon. Think of the applications! Let's head over to Sybil's. Sybil appears to have yet another career this episode, that of a beta tester. Head in to her shop and ask her about it. Wait a minute! Sybil's wearing some weird goggles, speaking gibberish, and thrashing about as if she's in some medieval fantasy battle. Sam deduces that she's been hypnotized, so it's time to deliver the standard blow to the head. Unfortunately, if you try to approach her, she'll start making violent motions with her arms. That cannon might do the trick. Fire it at her, and the goggles will fly off and break. Whoops! It turns out she wasn't so much hypnotized as she was play-testing Reality 2.0, a fully-immersive massively multiplayer something-or-other. Sybil says that her employers, the COPS, are next door where Lefty's used to be. It's also revealed that Sybil's been playing for a full week, and she realizes that maybe this job isn't for her.
Get ConnectedExit Sybil's, and walk over to talk to the COPS at the seemingly abandoned shop.
It turns out the COPS-or, the Computer Obsolescence Prevention Society-is a group of outdated-but-still-somehow-self-aware computer systems, and Reality 2.0 is their pet project. Sam and Max see the Internet as a grand hypnotic scheme (hey, there's the tie-in to the rest of the series) that the COPS are merely pawns in, and thus are determined to destroy the Internet to free the people enslaved by it. They'll provide you with a replacement chip for the goggles you smashed at Sybil's, as well as an extra pair of goggles for Max. You can keep talking to them about their meetings if you want to hear their excellent motivational song. After it's over, return to Sybil's to repair the goggles. Use the chip on the goggles, and you'll automatically enter Reality 2.0 for the first time. Groovy. Online (Straight.net)
There's nothing too exciting on Sybil's virtual space, but there's an irresistible glowing light emanating from the virtual closet. This is probably where Sybil is stashing all her loot. There's no way to open this door, unfortunately, and you're much too thick to squeeze through those cracks-for now. Exit Sybil's homepage and you'll notice that things are laid out in a similar fashion to Straight Street in Reality 2.0. Have a look around. The mailbox has been replaced by an email station guarded by an AI that looks surprisingly like Myra Stump (and wearing +1 armor). Chat with her, and you'll see that she's just as driven by moral outrage as Myra. Hey, we might want to send some electronic mail at some point, so let's see if we can get by this "Auntie Biotic" using force. Use the boxing glove on her and you'll enter a RPG-style combat sequence. It seems like Auntie Biotic is more than a match for Sam, and he is quickly defeated since he has no way to defend. Lefty's has been replaced by the Control Room, but everyone else's virtual space should be close to where you encounter it in the real world. Head down the street towards Bosco's. Hey, it's Hugh Bliss's giant, disembodied head! Let's talk to it. It turns out that it is actually a virtual representation of the Internet Wizard. Feel free to ask him about the plot, and he'll hint that to "win" you will need to fight monsters. Ask him to do a magic trick, and he'll give you a rainbow paint bucket for your car. This will come in very handy later on. Enter Bosco's. Go over to the back of the shop and click on the Monster-o-Matic dispenser. A blue gelatinous blob monster will pour out, with clearly hostile intent. Max really wants to fight it, so grab your boxing glove and use it on the blob. You'll be sucked into an combat sequence. You can choose some of your items to fight with, but they all seem to fail. Luckily, the monster flees every time you fight it. Talk to Bosco, and ask him how you go about paying him in the virtual world. He says that he's got all his money stashed away in the online Banco Lavadero banking system, and he won't give you his password. He says, however, that it's tattooed somewhere on his real world body. Additionally, getting to Banco Lavadero will require traveling on the information superhighway. We don't have his exorbitant fee quite yet, so let's keep exploring. Ask him what he has for sale in the virtual world, and he'll offer a wooden sword for five gold coins. That's a bit too much to spend right now. Head into your virtual office, and you'll encounter Jimmy Two-Teeth, who is hoarding one giant gold coin. He'll flee into his rat hole where you can't follow due to your size-at least not yet. Since there's nothing else in the office, head back to the street. Heading over towards Sybil's you should notice three gold coins that are just out of reach in midair, as well as a +2 sword lodged in the Liver 'n' Onions MP3 Download ad banner. There must be some way to get these hard to reach items! Bugging the Controllers
Walk over next to the Control room and try to pick up the jack-in-the-box that is lying on the street. You'll be rebuffed by a wall of pop-up ads. What the hell? That barrier of ads might prove useful in a combat sequence, but we can't get it right now since we can't get to the box itself. Enter the Control Room, and while the COPS will be somewhat unwilling to chat, you will find out that they each control some aspect of Reality 2.0's physics. The Arcade Game (Bluster Blaster) controls gravity, the office phone (Bob) is maintaining your height, the Osborne 1-like computer (Carl), and Chippy (the Pong game that bleeps) controls pop-up ads. Have a closer look at your inventory, and you'll see that the Organic Listening Device has become a "Computer Bug". Place it on Bluster Blaster, and Reality 2.0's gravity will lessen. Sweet!
Click on Chippy, and pop-up ads will be disabled. Return to the street, and pick up the jack-in-the-box. Now it's time to grab those coins. Go ahead and click on them, and Sam will grab them all in one jump. Jump up to the +2 sword, and you'll find that it's too-well lodged in the poster to grab right now. Return to the Control Room. Now that you have the jack-in-the-box, go ahead and re-enable pop-ups by clicking on Chippy. Place the computer bug on Carl (the blue one). You've become 2-dimensional! Head back over to Sybil's, and you should be able to slide right under the closet door. You will retrieve another gold coin! Now, how do we go about getting the coin from Jimmy? Return to the Control room once again, and place the computer bug on Bob, the phone. Sam and Max will shrink down to a fraction of their former height. Run over to the office, and you'll soon realize that this small size has its disadvantages, mostly due to the fact that you cannot clear the step leading to your office. Perhaps we should re-think our approach. Click on the icon in the lower right of your screen, and you will return to reality. Thankfully, your dimensions are back to normal in the real world. You're free to enter your real office now, so go on inside. Once there, put your goggles back on, and you'll be back to your shrunk-down size, but inside your virtual office. Walk in to the rat hole, and Sam and Max will thrash Jimmy and take his coin. Go back to the control room and retrieve your bug.
Fight!Go to Bosco's and purchase the wooden long sword with your hard-earned five gold coins. Remember that blue blob monster? It's time to get a proper victory. Generate another blob in the Monster-o-Matic, and use the sword on it in combat. You will defeat it, and it will leave behind some of its blue slime. Collect that, because you tend to need some kind of slime in these types of games. Now, let's go for a real fight.
Return to Auntie Biotic, and she'll still have attack initiative. Defend with the jack-in-the-box. Assuming you remembered to re-enable those pop-ups, her attack will fail. Next, attack with your sword. Uh-oh, it looks like her armor nullifies the effectiveness of the wooden sword. Go back to Bosco's and show him the wooden sword, which is clearly useless. While trying to demonstrate its impotence, you will strike him on the head, knocking him out of Reality 2.0. Oh, that's right, he was hypnotized. Chock one up for unintentional victories, little buddy. Return to the real world, and Bosco will admit he was under the spell of the Internet. Let's try to get a look at his password tattoo. Tell Bosco there's something behind him, and he'll turn around. Grab his binoculars while he's distracted, and use them to scour for his tattooed password, which turns out to be "Bosco". We should be able to get into his account now. Jump back into Reality 2.0. Hey, those binoculars have turned into a magnifier. Information Superhighway and Money Laundering
Jump into your virtual DeSoto and head to bancolavadero.com. It looks like there's a firewall blocking your path. You will get shoved to the side, and other cars with different color patterns are allowed through. We'll have to use some of that paint that the Internet Wizard gave us, but how do we determine which pattern to use? Take a close look at the license plates of the cars going through. They all have a letter combination as the first three characters on their plates. They all seem to include B, G, R, or P, without any other letters. It turns out that these are actually initials which correspond to the color combination on the car's body. For instance, a car with a license plate of BGP will have a blue front, green middle, and purple end. Head back to the office, and paint your car up based on the license place you have.
Once you're through, you'll be met with a giant display which shows an intricate money laundering scheme. We need to get Bosco his billions, but his account is still locked up. Click on it, and you'll be asked for a password. Say "Bosco", and it will be freed up for laundering purposes. Basically, the goal here is to get all the money into Bosco's account. Click on "cook the books" in any square to have the money flow based on how the arrows are set up. The money will keep moving until it reaches a dead end, based on the direction of the arrows (if they're all facing inward, there's nowhere for the money to go) or if it reaches a spot where there are no more arrows. If there is more than one arrow pointing outward in a given square, the money will split when it reaches that square. Notice also that the arrows will switch direction when you click "cook the books". This puzzle is not altogether difficult. Just keep steering the money downward towards Bosco. If you feel like you're stuck, you can "Uncook" to reset the money to its original location. For a very quick solution, you can solve it by using this pattern with the money in the starting position:
Once that's solved, Bosco will be a very wealthy man. Unleash the VirusReturn to reality, and pay Bosco a visit. He'll give you a freshly used BoscoTech tissue containing the Virulent Disease. Well, this might be useful, but not in the real world. Log back in to Reality 2.0. Bosco's invention has transformed into a Computer Disease, which should be the perfect device to destroy the Internet. Fantastic! Sending that out as an email virus should do the trick nicely, but we still have to face Auntie Biotic and defeat her in combat to use the terminal.
Return to the control room, and put the bug on Bluster Blaster to break gravity once again. That sword is still stuck in the poster, but we have that extremely useful blue slime this time around. Use it on the sword, and it can be removed much more easily. Start another combat sequence with Auntie Biotic by using a weapon on her, and remember to defend with the jack-in-the-box. Use the +2 sword on her, and she'll suffer enough damage to knock her out of the game. You're free to wreak havoc on the Internet by loosing the virus on the email station. The Internet is none too happy about this turn of events. The graphics start to disappear around you, and you are warned that if the Internet dies, you'll die too. It appears that it is now impossible to remove your Reality 2.0 goggles safely. Reality 1.5
The screen goes black, and Reality 1.5 starts to boot up. It appears to operate along similar lines to a text-input adventure game. From here on out, it will be important to read the text on the screen and use the verbs available to solve the remaining puzzle. The Internet has lost its respect for living things, and the world around you is becoming very unstable. Try getting the Respect for Living Things that is lying on the ground. Yikes, it fell into a chasm. Follow it down, and you'll "see" it get eaten by a giant, hungry Shambling Corporate Presence. You can't do anything here, as the Corporate Presence won't be intimidated by your +2 sword. Go back up to the street. Go East, and you'll be in front of a floating Bosco's store. These text adventures allow you to try almost anything, don't they? Try getting the store. Surprisingly, that works! Go West, then down. Use the Bosco's with the Shambling Corporate Presence, and the store will be devoured quickly. Return to the surface and get another Bosco's. Good thing there is a limitless supply. Return to the main area, and head Northwest. You'll be in Sybil's office, where Kittens are flying out of the wall and creating a Lake of Nauseating Cuteness. Get the Rare Foil Card. Sam and Max won't take the lake or the kittens, but why not try dipping the Bosco's in the lake? Strange, but it works. You now possess a nauseating store. Exit Southeast, and return to the chasm.
Feed the nauseating Bosco's to the Corporate Presence and it will, erm, purge the Respect for Living Things, making it gettable once again. Grab it, and return to the surface. Give the Respect for Living Things to the Internet, and you'll be bounced out of Reality 1.5 and back into the real world. The internet will reveal that it was tricked by a certain Roy G. Biv, but will perish before it gives any more clues as to Roy's identity. Sam and Max are determined to uncover this mystery, eventually, but that will have to wait for the next episode.
